A Future Full of Promise: Highlights from the 2026 ALSAME Youth Conference

On May 8, 2026, the halls of Western Michigan University (WMU) were buzzing with an energy that could only mean one thing: the ALSAME Youth Conference had arrived.

Hundreds of high school students from across Southwest Michigan—and some who traveled from the opposite side of the state—descended upon the WMU Student Center. Their mission? To explore the vast horizon of life after high school and discover the tools they need to turn their dreams into reality.

Empowering the Next Generation

The conference, hosted by ALSAME (Advocates for Latino Student Advancement in Michigan Education), served as a roadmap for students navigating the often-overwhelming transition to higher education. Throughout the day, attendees participated in a variety of breakout sessions designed to tackle the “what comes next” head-on.

Highlights from the session lineup included:

• “Life After High School” – A deep dive into the different types of degrees, from trade certifications and associate degrees to traditional four-year bachelor’s programs.

• “AI is Not Just for Coders” – A forward-thinking session on how students can use artificial intelligence for self-advocacy and college planning.

• “From Struggle to Achievement” – An inspiring look at building a resilient mindset and leveraging personal identity as a strength in academic spaces.

Words of Wisdom

The morning kicked off with a powerful message from the keynote speaker, Monteze O. Morales. Their words set a tone of empowerment, reminding every student in the room that their background is not a barrier, but a unique asset to their future leadership.

A Glimpse of Campus Life

It wasn’t all workshops and lectures! Students got a true taste of the Bronco life by:

• Exploring the College Fair: Meeting with representatives from various institutions to learn about specific programs and admissions requirements.

• Eating in the Cafeteria: A highlight for many, getting to experience the “dining hall life” and mingle with current college students.

• Touring the Campus: Seeing firsthand what a premier research university like WMU has to offer.

Investing in the Future: ALSAME Scholarships

One of the most emotional and rewarding parts of the day was the awarding of the ALSAME Scholarships. Several deserving seniors were recognized for their hard work and dedication, receiving financial support to help bridge the gap between their goals and their tuition bills.

A Great Day for Michigan Students

By the time the buses pulled away from Kalamazoo, it was clear that the day was a resounding success. Whether they were from just down the road or the other side of the state, every student left with a bit more clarity, a lot more confidence, and perhaps a new WMU shirt in their bag.
